Grandpa Dimitrios' favorite dish should not be missed: Fakés (pronounced fatjès). This Greek lentil soup is very healthy and rich in nutrients, but above all: incredibly tasty! Moreover, the recipe is easy to make. In Greece, Fakes is a true classic.
Ingredients
- 250 grams Black Lentils
- 1 medium Onion (chopped)
- 1 clove Garlic (sliced)
- 1-2 bay leaf(s)
- 150 ml olive oil
- 125 ml strained tomato sauce
- Salt and pepper
Optional if desired: extra garlic, onion powder, a tablespoon of vinegar and turmeric powder.
Method of preparation
- Boil the lentils for 10 minutes and drain the water and set the lentils aside.
- Add the 100 ml olive oil to the pan, heat and add the chopped onions and sliced garlic.
- When it is ready, add the lentils and 0.5 liters of water to the pan, including the desired spices. Salt and pepper and the bay leaves must be added. Then cook for 30 minutes over medium heat.
- After 30 minutes, add the extra 50 ml of olive oil and the tomato juice. Then cook for another 10-20 minutes, until the soup thickens.
- At the very end, add a tablespoon of vinegar, then the lentil soup is ready.
